About

The Holocaust Museum in Bom Retiro is dedicated to remembering the Shoah, as well as education and research. Opened in 2011, it was the first Holocaust museum in Brazil. The project was conceived by Miguel Krigsner, connected to the Associação Casa de Cultura Beit Yaacov. The museum’s purpose is to preserve the memory of the Holocaust and to discuss the risks of hatred, intolerance, racism, and prejudice through a historical and educational approach. Visits are scheduled in advance and offered with guided mediation for the registered public. This format organizes the route and provides context for the content presented throughout the visit. The museum welcomes school groups and general visitors, with activities focused on a historical reading of the topic and on audience development. In periods already recorded, the museum has welcomed around 800 people per week. The collection and curatorial proposal include testimonies and stories from survivors, as well as educational materials designed to address prejudice and violence. The institution works on Shoah memory and education through different fronts, combining exhibitions, guided mediation, and supporting materials for schools, groups, and visitors. Spread across about 400 m², the museum brings together exhibition and educational resources aimed at understanding the Holocaust and its historical developments. In addition to guided visits, the program includes seminars, debates, and temporary exhibitions. These activities expand the museum’s work beyond the main exhibit and reinforce its role as a center for Shoah memory and education. The overall offering includes a collection and educational materials against prejudice, used in training and reflection actions on violence, discrimination, and human rights.
