About

Africa Park is a new public space under development in Pinheirinho, Curitiba. Designed as a place for recreation, urban renewal, and environmental infrastructure, the project also carries a clear cultural purpose by honoring African and Afro-Brazilian contributions to the city's history. With about 70,000 square meters, the park incorporates Praça Zumbi dos Palmares and reorganizes a shared-use area that serves the neighborhood while also holding broader metropolitan appeal. The plan brings together landscape design, circulation, and places to stay, shaping an Afro-Brazilian park where symbolism is not a side note, but part of the site's identity. Nature-viewing areas are also part of the concept, offering moments of pause within a region marked by intense daily activity. For everyday use, the project includes upgrades to walking paths, improved accessibility, and the renovation of sports courts. Plans also include playground areas, fitness equipment, and a beach tennis court, creating a setting suited both to casual strolls and outdoor exercise. Rather than a purely scenic park, the proposal points to a space for gathering, movement, and longer stays, with structures designed for different age groups and ways of using the space. The environmental component is one of the project's defining features. A retention lake planned to manage stormwater during rainy periods aligns the park with Curitiba's sponge city approach, in which public space helps absorb, store, and manage water as part of the landscape. This solution connects flood prevention, environmental improvement, and urban design, showing how a new park can combine infrastructure and public life in the same area. There is also an institutional and service layer tied to the development, including plans for a second municipal veterinary hospital within the park grounds. Even so, the project's strongest feature remains its blend of leisure, memory, and landscape. By incorporating Praça Zumbi dos Palmares and inscribing African and Afro-Brazilian presence into the urban space, Africa Park already stands out as a place of public meaning, even before opening, while still under construction.
