German Woods (Bosque Alemão)

German Woods is a themed park in Curitiba that brings together nature, the memory of immigration, and references to German culture. Its main appeal is turning an area of native forest into a walk that blends strolling, symbolic architecture, literature, and music. Opened in 1996, the park covers 38,000 square meters on land that once belonged to the old Schaffer family estate. Along the route, the wooded landscape connects with spaces created to celebrate and share German traditions, helping explain why it has become one of the city's best-known landmarks. Among its most striking features is a replica of an old wooden church, inspired by a building erected in 1933 in the Seminário neighborhood. The structure features Neo-Gothic decorative elements and houses the Bach Oratory, a concert hall that gives the park a musical dimension rarely found in urban green spaces. Nearby, German Poetry Square recreates the facade of Casa Mila, an early-20th-century German-style building, reinforcing the dialogue between landscape and architecture. The most storybook-like part of the visit appears on the Hansel and Gretel Trail, inspired by the Brothers Grimm tale. Along the way, the park draws visitors into a childlike world that continues at the Enchanted House, the woods' public library, where storytelling sessions are held for the general public. This combination makes the space appealing both for family outings and for a quieter, more reflective cultural experience. The walk can end at the Philosophers' Tower, a wooden lookout with panoramic views of the city and the Serra do Mar mountain range.
