About

The Polish Immigration Memorial is an open-air museum dedicated to the Polish community in Curitiba. Located in Centro Cívico, inside Bosque do Papa—also known as Bosque João Paulo II—it organizes the visit around architecture, everyday objects, and religious references connected to the immigration. The site works as a tourist attraction and is open to visitors, while also hosting events and exhibitions. The complex brings together seven rustic log houses inspired by the buildings used by Polish immigrants in Paraná. These structures were brought from former colonies, including Tomás Coelho in Araucária and Muricy in São José dos Pinhais. The memorial aims to show, in a tangible way, what these families’ homes and domestic surroundings were like, focusing on the material culture preserved on site. Among the memorial’s highlights is a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Częstochowa, Poland’s patron saint. The complex also includes an indoor museum with a collection of furniture and household utensils used by Polish immigrants, as well as a kiosk offering Polish crafts and typical products. Together, these elements broaden the experience beyond the houses, helping visitors understand daily habits, devotions, and everyday objects. The memorial was inaugurated in 1980, in direct connection with Pope John Paul II’s visit to Curitiba that same year. The site is also associated with this tribute and, since 2023, has been recognized as an Open-Air Museum and considered a Sanctuary by the Vatican. These milestones reinforce the memorial’s symbolic and heritage value within Bosque do Papa. As you walk through the memorial, you’ll see how Polish immigration is represented through the houses, the chapel, and the domestic collection. The visit helps you understand aspects of daily life, religious devotion, and the family organization depicted in the space—while also showing how this memory was brought together in an open site for visitors.
